Stanislav Klykh brutally tortured – lawyer

Ukrainian Stanislav Klykh, detained in Russia, was tortured in the first months after his arrest.

Russian lawyer of Stanislav Klykh, Marina Dubrovina has said this in an interview with the Center for Civil Liberties, published on the Radio Liberty.

“Stanislav had been tortured till he gave evidence. First, he refused to give evidence, referring to the Article 51 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation. But the pressure grew … When, during the interrogation, he couldn’t name the caliber Kalashnikov assault rifle, which he allegedly used to shot Russian soldiers [there are several models of Kalashnikov assault rifle of different calibers], he had been beaten until he learned the caliber ‘appointed’ to him, and announced it. Accordingly, the indictment clearly states that caliber. I am sure it was the same situation with Karpiuk, because he incriminated himself and Klykh …” the lawyer said.

As a reminder, UNSO leader Mykola Karpiuk was detained by the Russian security service officers in Chernihiv region, Ukraine, on March 21, 2014 and was taken to Russia. Journalist Stanislav Klykh was arrested on August 11, 2014 in the Russian city of Orel. The Russian investigation accuses both Ukrainians of killing at least 30 Russian military during the war in Chechnya, from December 1994 to January 1995. 

The Russian side has repeatedly banned the consul from visiting Karpiuk and Klykh. Karpiuk did even have a lawyer until recently.

The private court session in the case is to be held in the Supreme Court of Grozny in Chechnya on September 15.
