Court extends custodial term for former Berkut officers accused of shootings on Maidan until September 30

The Sviatoshynsky District Court in Kyiv has extended custodial term for former officers of the Berkut special riot police force Pavlo Abroskin, Serhiy Zinchenko, Oleksandr  Marynchenko, Serhiy Tamtura and Oleh Yanishevsky, accused of the murder of 48 Euromaidan activists in Kyiv.

Judge Serhiy Dyachuk announced this on Tuesday, Ukrayinski Novyny news agency reports.

Therefore the jury granted a motion of the prosecutor’s office and extended custodial term for the accused for two more months.

As a reminder, in 2014, the Prosecutor General’s Office submitted to court the criminal proceedings against former Berkut officers Oleksandr Zinchenko and Pavlo Abroskin, suspected of killing 39 Maidan activists on February 20, 2014 on Instytutska street in the centre of Kyiv.

February 10, 2016 the Prosecutor General’s Office submitted to court the criminal proceedings against three more former Berkut officers, Oleksandr  Marynchenko, Serhiy Tamtura and Oleh Yanishevsky, who are being accused of committing a terrorist act, abuse of power, homicide, assault to murder, preclusion of conduct of peaceful rallies and meetings, stealing and concealment of weapons after the crime.

Prosecutor of the Prosecutor General’s Office Yanis Simonov stated that 25 officers involved in shootings on the Instytutska Street were identified and 20 of them are wanted.
