July 14, the Shevchenkivsky District Court of Kyiv started the trial of judge Svitlana Volkova, who released a Berkut riot police officer, suspected of killing 39 Maidan activists, from detention under house arrest.

The Human Rights Information Centre correspondent learnt this from the Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law.

According to the human rights activists, Svitlana Volkova is the judge of Pechersky District Court of Kyiv, who ordered to put former commander of Berkut riot police force Dmytro Sadovnyk, suspected of killing 39 Maidan activists, under house arrest and released him from custody in the courtroom.

The Kyiv Prosecutor’s Office served a notice of suspicion against the judge over delivering knowingly unjust verdict that led to serious consequences (Article 375 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The judge has been longed delayed consideration of the case files, making their submission to the court impossible.

In 2016, the High Council of Justice of Ukraine recommended that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine should dismiss judge Volkova due to breaking of oath.

If a judge is found guilty, she can be imprisoned for up to 8 years in prison, pursuant to the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
