The court in occupied Crimea has extended custodial term of Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Akhtem Chiygoz until January 2017.

His wife Elmira Ablyalimova reported about this on Facebook on September 29.

At today’s court hearing, the custodial term of Akhtem Chiygoz was extended until January 8, 2017,” she wrote.

As reported, Akhtem Chiygoz was arrested in January 2015 for participating in a rally in support of the territorial integrity of Ukraine in front of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea on February 26, 2014. At that time, pro-Russian activists, including the party ‘Russian Unity’ opposed the protesters. Pro-Russian authorities of annexed Crimea accused Chiygoz of organizing mass riots.

Russian court is considering ‘Chiygoz case’ as part of ‘February 26 case’, which on July, 20, during a closed court hearing was divided into two different cases: a separate case on Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Akhtem Chiygoz and separate case of other defendants– Ali Asanov and Mustafa Degermendzhi.

On Thursday, 29 September, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation upheld ban on the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people activities on territory of Russia as ‘extremist organization’.
