On June 22 and 23, the Supreme Court of the occupied Crimea made the decision to leave the suspects of the Yalta “Hizb ut-Tahrir case” Arsen Dzhepparov and Muslim Aliyev in custody.

Arsen Dzhepparov

As reported by online publication Krym.Realiyi.

The court rejected the lawyers’ appeal against the extension of the arrest of Crimean Tatars until August 8.

Dzhepparov’s lawyer, Dzhemil Temishev told the publication that his client’s health had improved, but he plans to seek for opportunities to examine Dzhepparov in a hospital or a clinic.

“He feels better, the symptoms have been relieved after pills, but we don’t know what caused this, therefore he needs an examination”, – said Temishev.

The lawyer has also reported on his Facebook page that the court hearing was held in a closed session, but the court allowed for Dzhepparov’s relatives to be present during the announcement of the decision.

Dzhepparov’s wife, mother and daughter were able to see him through video calls, through which court hearings are held.

The hearing on the case of Muslim Aliyev was also held in a closed session.

As a reminder, on June 13, Dzhepparov was placed in punitive cell for 25 days for failure to open the door to his cell under the demand of the SIZO (pre-trial detention center) administration.

Later, on June 16, lawyer Dzhemil Temishev reported that Dzhepparov had written a statement about the need to provide him with medical assistance in connection with the deterioration of his health.

As a reminder, defendants of Yalta “Hizb ut-Tahir” case Refat Alimov and Arsen Dzheparov remain in prison for more than a year after they were arrested in Krasnokamianka on April 18, 2016. The first four of the defendants were arrested back in February 11, 2016. Emir-Useyin Kuku, member of the Human Rights Contact Centre is the most famous one. Builders Muslim Aliev and Enver Bekirov as well as florist Vadym Siruk were also arrested.

Defenders of arrested and convicted Crimean residents in the “Hizb ut-Tahrir” case consider their persecution to be motivated on religious grounds. Lawyer Emil Kurbedinov notes that in this case the Russian law enforcement bodies are mostly pursuing Crimean Tatars, as well as Ukrainians, Russians, Tajiks, Azerbaijanis and Crimean residents of another ethnic origin who profess Islam.

Representatives of the International Islamic political organization “Hizb ut-Tahir” called its mission to unite all Muslim countries into an Islamic caliphate. However they reject all kinds of terroristic methods to achieve their goals and believe their organization to be unfairly subjected to persecution in Russia. Russia’s Supreme Court banned “Hizb ut-Tahir” in 2003 and included it in the list of terrorist organizations.
