The clearing out of independent journalists continues in Donetsk. As reported by News of Donbass, this was stated by Olexiy Matsuka, a journalist and head of the organization “Donetsk Institute of Information,” which publishes that online news source, as well as “Public TV Donbass.”

According to Matsuka, a freelancer for “Public TV Donbass” in Donetsk was hunted down. Armed separatists attacked the journalist’s apartment. The journalist was hurt as well.

“In Donetsk, it is impossible to conduct full journalistic work. Independent journalists are the first targets for armed separatists. Exactly one year ago saw the first wave of the clearing out of the information field in occupied Donetchina [collective name of Donetsk region]. A year has passed and the methods of the separatists have only toughened. It’s a real Stalinist ‘people’s’ republic,” Matsuka said.

According to a Ukrainian NGO, the Institute of Mass Information (IMI), there were 16 recorded cases of beatings of journalists, 12 cases of censorship, 9 intimidation cases, and 6 violations of journalists’ rights in the territories under the control of the so-called “DNR” and “LNR” in the first quarter of 2015.

“Almost no Ukrainian journalists remain in the territories captured by militants of the so-called ‘DNR’ and ‘LNR,’ but the IMI recorded instances of arrests and searches of foreign correspondents, including from Poland, Italy, and Russia,” says a report by the IMI.
