State Bureau of Investigation set up in Ukraine

The Parliament of Ukraine voted for the establishment of the State Bureau of Investigation, which will deal with the cases subject to the prosecutor’s offices now.

As reported by the “Ukrayinska Pravda” (Ukrainian Truth) Ukrainian media outlet, 241 MPs supported the decision.

After the long discussions on the appointment of the Bureau director, the MPs agreed that the director will be appointed by the President upon recommendation of the Prime Minister following the decision of the competition committee.

According to the law, the Bureau shall reveal, expose and suppress the crimes associated with organized criminal groups, war crimes, crimes committed by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office employees.

In addition, the Bureau will investigate cases of torture and other crimes related to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment committed by prosecutors, investigators (detectives) of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Security Service of Ukraine, the police and other law enforcement personnel.

As a reminder, the Parliament voted down this bill on July 15 and sent it to the second reading.
