At 11:00 of September 29, 2016, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation will consider the appeal of lawyers of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people against the decision of the Supreme Court of the occupied Crimea to ban the activities of the Mejlis.

The Human Rights Information Centre learnt this from the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.

The case is accompanied by the lawyers of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union and the Russian lawyers of the “Memorial” Human Rights Centre.

April 26, 2016, the Supreme Court of the occupied Crimea recognized the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as an extremist organization and banned its activities. The Mejlis is a representative body elected by the Crimean Tatar people, so the prohibition of its activities entailed a violation of the rights of the whole of people.

The Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea launched criminal proceeding over illegal ban of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People in Crimea.

The lawyers filed an appeal against the decision of the Supreme Court, consideration of which will be held in Moscow in late September.
