The war against free speech is waged in Crimea, and is spreading beyond its borders.

The Human Rights Information Centre invites everyone who wishes to participate in a discussion on the freedom of speech and the current environment that impacts journalist work in Crimea.

Recently, Russian authorities arrested the Ukrainian journalist Roman Suschenko in Moscow charging him with espionage. This case shows that Russia has gone beyond Crimean borders in its repressive practices against Ukrainian journalists.

Persecution of journalists, which began in parallel to the illegal annexation of Crimea, continues as Russian authorities block independent media outlets, launch criminal cases against Crimean journalists and attempt to limit freedom of expression in other ways.

What is the current situation with media freedom in Crimea? How can Crimean journalists be protected? This side-event will seek answers to these questions. Participants will also discuss the issue of foreign journalist access to Crimea.

The event will be held within the framework of the OSCE Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting.
